Thomas Schweich for Auditor: Bringing D.C. Ideas to Missouri

Fellow Bush Appointees Sending Campaign Cash

Jefferson City, MO – Other than the $100,000 donation Thomas Schweich received from Missouri’s Lieutenant Governor, a look at his campaign finance reports shows that Schweich's fellow Bush appointees are sending checks to his campaign.

Since Thomas Schweich spent part of this decade working for the Bush Administration in Washington, it’s not surprising that some of Thomas Schweich’s fellow Bush appointees are already sending money to his campaign. (www.mec.mo.gov)

For instance, he has taken $500 from Goli Ameri who was an Assistant Secretary of State under Bush and $1,000 from Robert O’Brien, a Bush appointee to the United Nations. He has also already brought in controversial U.N. delegate John Bolton for fundraisers.

Missouri Democratic Party Communications Director, Ryan Hobart issued the following statement about Schweich's connections and history in Washington.

“Missourians don’t need a Washington official who was part of Bush administration to preach to them about fiscal responsibility and responsible use of tax dollars. Thomas Schweich has spent most of the past decade working in Washington, and now he is turning to fellow Bush appointees for campaign cash. Both his connections and comments show that he is intent on bringing Bush-style partisanship to the State Auditor’s office.”

Thomas Schweich has previously said that he thinks it is very important to have a Republican auditing spending by Democrats, which raised questions about his ability to separate politics from auditing. (Springfield News Leader 9/9/09)

"There's an important policy reason that this auditor's race is so important, and there's also a very significant reason from a political standpoint if you're a loyal Republican," said Schweich, a Washington University law professor and former ambassador to Afghanistan.
