Party Time in DC: Congressman Roy Blunt Named Top Washington Party Animal

Blunt is recognized for parties with lobbyists and Washington insiders

Jefferson City, MO – The Sunlight Foundation unveiled their list of the “Top Congressional Partiers” for 2009, and Congressman Roy Blunt is near the top of the list. In fact, he is in the top five partiers, with 30 parties and fundraisers listed in the Sunlight Foundation’s “Party Time” database. Congressman Blunt isn’t the only member of his family who has received recognition for being a Washington socialite. His wife, Abigail Blunt, was named a top Washington party animal by Politico earlier this year.

“It is troubling that Congressman Blunt has spent more time partying and raising money from corporate lobbyists and Washington insiders than just about any other member of Congress,” said Missouri Democratic Party Spokesman Ryan Hobart. “This further proves how deeply entrenched Congressman Blunt is in the culture of Washington insiders and lobbyists that produced major scandals involving his confidants Tom Delay and Jack Abramoff.”

Some of the more notable parties Blunt has had include:

  • Recently, Blunt has been trying to ensure that he doesn’t lose his place as the number one recipient of lobbyist money so he held a fundraiser hosted by Washington Insiders – Fred “Republican Kingmaker” Malek and Charlie “Super lobbyist” Black. (CQ 12/1/09; USA Today, 10/4/09)

  • In September, Congressman Blunt held a fundraiser sponsored by big oil companies like Exxon Mobil and Marathon. Recently, Congressman Blunt has been feeling the heat for taking over 1 Million dollars from big oil and energy interests, but that has not stopped him from taking their money for his campaign. • He even brought a top Washington insider to Missouri when he held a dinner fundraiser in St. Louis with Newt Gingrich. It was reported that ticket prices for that event went for over $100,000 per couple, which included a special VIP meet and greet with the Congressman and former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich.
