Congressman Blunt voted against H.R. 2847, which includes funding for infrastructure projects and aid to help states avoid laying off police, teachers, and emergency workers. The bill also extends unemployment benefits and a health insurance subsidy program, both set to expire at the end of the year. Despite Blunt’s no vote, the bill passed and will go to the Senate. “After spending 12 years ramming fiscally reckless and economically disastrous policies through Congress, this vote shows that Congressman Blunt would rather continue to side with corporate special interest groups than unemployed workers in Missouri,” said Missouri Democratic Party Communications Ryan Hobart. “Missouri has more than 280,000 unemployed workers, and despite Blunt’s attempts at obstruction, this bill will help get many Missourians back to work. Once again, Congressman Blunt is blocking commonsense efforts to help the people of Missouri without offering any alternative ideas.” Congressman Blunt, a 12 year Washington insider and one of the leaders of Republicans in Congress, has a history of voting for his own interests before those of working families. Cong. Blunt repeatedly opposed increases in the minimum wage but voted 13 times to increase his own congressional pay, including a vote earlier this year to raise his salary to $170,000 while Missourians suffered in the worst economy since the Great Depression. Congressman Blunt, Senator Chuck Purgason and Kansas City auto consultant Mark Memoly are competing in the August 2010 primary for the Republican nomination for US Senate. --30--
