Recently Announced Congressional Candidate Bill “Small Government” Stouffer Promoted a $7.2 Billion Tax Increase

Republican hypocrisy already evident in race for Congress

Jefferson City, Mo – State Senator Bill Stouffer is holding a series of events over the next few days to kick off his campaign for the Congressional seat held by Representative Ike Skelton.

However, Senator Stouffer has already started sending out letters to voters asking for support and donations, saying:

“I believe outrage in the battle of small v. big government is festering in the heartlands of this nation. It is time for good men and women to stand up and say, ‘enough is enough.’ Will you join me in this battle?” (Stouffer fund-raising letter)

Senator Stouffer failed to mention to his fellow advocates for “smaller government” that he has pushed for a $7.2 billion tax increase during his time in the Missouri legislature:

“Bill Stouffer, chairman of the Senate Transportation Committee, has proposed a 1-cent sales tax, generating $7.2 billion over 10 years. The money would be used to rebuild Interstate 70 and Interstate 44 with four lanes in each direction, two each for big trucks and other vehicles.” (AP 6/12/07)

In response to early hypocritical statements made by State Senator Stouffer, Missouri Democratic Party Executive Director Brian Zuzenak released the following statement:

“It is absurd for someone who proposed a $7.2 billion tax increase to pretend to be a champion for smaller government. Senator Stouffer’s double-standard is not going to win the confidence of voters in the fourth congressional district, especially when they already have a trusted voice in Congress like Representative Ike Skelton.”
