Out of Touch Alert: Spence Again Reveals He’s Unfamiliar with Missouri Sounds Disappointed that Running for Governor Not Like “Flying to New York… or California”
Asked by KTRS host McGraw Milhaven if running for Governor was what he expected, Dave Spence sounded almost wistful when he responded that “it may not be you know, flying to New York to see customers or California or whatever, but it's now seeing the people of Missouri.” (Audio attached). This isn’t the first time that Spence has inadvertently reminded voters just how out-of-touch he is with ordinary Missourians:
Spence “Amazed’ At Missouri’s Beauty. After Spence remarked that he was “amazed at how nice people are and how beautiful Missouri is,” National Journal’s Hotline gave the candidate some advice: “it’s best not to sound like you are unfamiliar with the parts of the state that lie outside the metropolitan area you are from.” [Hotline, 6/21/12]
Spence Reported Zero Individual Contributions from Kansas City in Q1. Dave Spence’s April quarterly fundraising report highlighted Spence’s narrow appeal, showing 0 individual contributions from Kansas City and only 1 from Springfield. As reported by the Kansas City Star, “Dave Spence's latest campaign finance disclosure suggests he has some work to do to raise cash in our part of the state….In fact, Spence raised 50 times as much from Ocean Ridge, Fla., as he did from the entire Kansas City region during the period. Spence Said Serving on Bank Board Not “Fun”; Compared Experience to Normandy. “Being on a bank board was not a lot of fun the last four years,” Spence told PoliticMO in November. In Springfield, Spence compared being involved in the banking industry to being “on Normandy and you’ve got 500 ships comin’ at you.” [PoliticMO, 11/15/11; Springfield Chamber of Commerce, 5/3/12]
